Dr. Harley Benz, WHS Grad, Chief Earthquake Scientist - USGS

"Cool name of the day: Harley Benz
It's funny how the news cycle can turn regular people just doing their jobs into overnight celebrities. The Chile quake, obviously, is a huge catastrophe, and it will be days before we fully understand the magnitude of the damage. As a resident of a quake-prone part of the world, I commiserate with residents near Santiago. Having said that, I did a double take when reading the WSJ.com coverage of the quake: "This was a big one," said Harley Benz, scientist in charge of the USGS's National Earthquake Information Center in Golden, Colo. Harley Benz? Are you kidding me? That's gotta be one of the coolest names I've seen in a long time. We even have a photo of Mr. Benz with a seismographic tracing, just to add to the verisimilitude."
Harley graduated from WHS in 1975 where he was an outstanding student and athlete.  He attended UCM and then received his PhD from the University of Kansas. He is also an adjunct professor at the University of Utha. He lives in Colorado and is the brother to Vicki Benz.
