Dr. Hugh Hanna was the first general surgeon at Western Missouri Medical Center.
WARRENSBURG, Mo.--For many years, when someone here said he was going to have surgery, it likely meant the doctor would be Dr. Hugh Hanna.
Dr. Hanna was Johnson County's first general surgeon, and in more than 30 years, brought about many changes at Western Missouri Medical Center. He died Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2010, at WMMC.
Arrangements are pending at Williams Funeral Chapel in Warrensburg.
“Dr. Hanna has a remarkable history in Johnson County, especially at Western Missouri Medical Center,” said Craig J. Marks, president and chief executive officer, at the dedication of the hospital's Hanna Surgery Center last December.
The history of innovation and surgical advances at WMMC began with Hanna in 1967. He was the chief of surgery and anesthesia for 29 years. Among his accomplishments, Hanna performed the first laparoscopic gall bladder operation at WMMC.
Determined to make a difference, Hanna purchased the first cardiac monitor for surgical patients at WMMC, as well as the equipment to perform the first fiber optic colonoscopy and EGD. He also helped design the first surgical and intensive care units at the Medical Center.
A member of the medical staff from 1967 to 2000, Hanna served as chief of the medical staff several times, as well as chair of the Board of Trustees after retiring from his surgical practice. He was serving his second term on the Board of Trustees.
Hanna’s roots in Johnson County extend to his family’s arrival in 1850. As a lifelong resident, Hanna’s loyalty benefited local residents and nearby communities for more than 30 years.
He was the first general surgeon to live in Johnson County, and served as the trauma chairman for Johnson County for the American Board of Surgeons. From 1967 to 1972, Hanna was the only surgeon at Whiteman Air Force Base. He served as surgeon at the hospitals in Windsor and Sweet Springs, as well.
Hanna recruited the first ophthalmologist and orthopedic surgeon, as well as three other general surgeons for Warrensburg. Hanna also had a special place in his heart for his alma mater, the University of Central Missouri. He served on the original Foundation at UCM and was a familiar face at many UCM athletic events
