Kathryn H. Owings
Kathryn H. Owings, 90, of Warrensburg, passed away Thursday, May 27, 2010, at the Country Club Care Center. She was born on May 5, 1920, in Clay County, the daughter of Thomas T. and Jennie Morris Hopkins.On June 11, 1942, in Pasadena, Calif., she was united in marriage to A.C. Owings Jr. He preceded her in death on June 8, 1972. Kathryn was a 1938 graduate of Ruskin High School and received her B.S. in Education at the University of Central Missouri in 1944. She taught school at Higginsville, Grain Valley and math at Warrensburg Elementary until her retirement in 1986.Mrs. Owings was a former member of the ABC Club, Villag e Improvement Club of Centerview, Secunda Club, ACBL, holding the rank of bronze Life Master, Western Missouri Medical Center Auxiliary, Alpha Sigma Alpha, Retired Teachers of Missouri and Johnson County and numerous bridge clubs. She volunteered for Meals on Wheels, served as a 4-H leader, was a member of the First Christian Church and taught Sunday school. Kathryn enjoyed traveling, reading, puzzles and playing bridge. Survivors include her son, Charles Owings and wife, Pam, and one daughter, Sandra Kay Warner and husband, Marvin, all of Centerview; three grandsons, Jeffrey Warner of Centerview, Brett Warner and wife, Crystal, of Warrensburg, and Ryan Owings and wife, Sarah, of Oak Grove; two great-grandsons, Caleb and Levi Warner, both of Warrensburg; and a nephew, Jack Hopkins of Raymore. She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Jack, Vern and Charles Hopkins; and a nephew, Tom Hopkins. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 2, at the First Christian Church in Warrensburg, with Pastor Jerry Basye officiating. Interment will follow in the Sunset Hill Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today, Tuesday, June 1, at the Sweeney-Phillips & Holdren Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be Ted Fisher, Gary and Roger Baldwin, Jack Hopkins, Robin Crouch and Judd Boyer. Honorary pallbearers are Tom and Elaine King, Earl Uhler, Marge Berry, Margaret Warnick and Sue Crouch. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Christian Church or Meals on Wheels in care of the funeral home.
