Jul. 14--Steve L. Wright Jr.'s young age and diminutive stature belied the extent of his years-long criminal rampage on Kansas City streets. And it took years of often frustrating work by a partnership of Kansas City and federal law enforcement officials to finally bring him to justice. Today, those men and women were honored in a ceremony at Kansas City police headquarters. Led by Kansas City police detective James Herrington, officers spent countless hours building the case against the teenage leader of one of the city's most notorious gangs. The work was complicated by the justifiable fear many witnesses had about testifying against Wright and his co-defendants.

But their work paid off in February 2007 when Wright was sentenced to life in federal prison plus 110 years for his role in three murders, numerous non-fatal shootings and a host of drug trafficking crimes. Herrington, the lead detective, received a certificate of commendation. He and the other members of the career criminal section received a special unit citation.

Kansas City officers honored were:

Capt. John Mueller, Capt. Roger Lewis, Capt. Kevin O'Sullivan, Sgt. Eric Greenwell, Sgt. Stacey Graves, and detectives Herrington, Robert Browning, Joseph Daneff, Donie Hoffman, Richard Marquez, Eric Powell and Reed Buente of Warrensburg.
