Dewey E. Armes, 78, has died; funeral is Saturday

WARRENSBURG, Mo.-- Dewey E. Armes, 78, of Warrensburg, died Sunday, June 5, 2011, at the Kansas City Hospice and Palliative Care House. He was born July 7, 1932, the son of George Alva and Agnes (Atherton) Armes in Bloomfield, Mo. June 26, 1954, he married Barbara Tuovila in Detroit, Mich. She preceded him in death on March 25, 1992. Armes served in the U.S. Air Force from 1950 to 1970, serving in Korea, and retired as a Master Sergeant. He was formerly a pastor of the Ishpeming Baptist Church in Ishpeming, Mich., and a member of the First Baptist Church in Warrensburg. He was member of American Legion, VFW, and a Lifetime member of the Disabled Veterans of America. He was also a member of the Air Force Sergeant’s Association. Armes is survived by his children: Beverly Pitts of Ridgeway, Mo.; Stephen Armes of Warrensburg; Beth Armes of Independence, Mo.; and Brenda Shell of Louisville, Ky.; one brother: Robert Armes of Milan, Mo.; two sisters: Laura Almond of Flint, Mich.; and Mary Williams of Lathrop, Mo; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was also preceded in death by his parents; one grandson: Chuck Pitts on December 21, 2001; four brothers: Wilbur, Leon, Albert, and Ted Armes; and two sisters: Geneva Parker and Cathy Wagner. His funeral service will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, June 11, 2011, at Sweeney-Phillips & Holdren Funeral Home in Warrensburg with Pastor Albion Mendsofficiating. Burial will be at Sunset Hill Cemetery with full military honors provided by Whiteman Air Force Base Color Guard. The family will receive friends from 10:30 a.m. until service time Saturday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Samaritan’s Purse and can be left at the funeral home.
